10 Vaccine Myths and the truth behind them

Vaccines are meant to help and protect the baby from some of the most dangerous diseases of this world but meltdown that some babies go through after vaccination can be heartbreaking to the parents. If your baby does react well to the vaccine, you will probably suffer from one of those long existing myths that vaccines do more harm than good. A University of Michigan study found that almost 93% of pediatricians have met at least one parent who refused the administration of vaccines to their child. According to experts, many myths about vaccines are coming up because of the success of the vaccine program. There are many dangerous diseases that have been eradicated by the use of vaccines. Because diseases like measles and polio have been practically eliminated, people no longer feel as compelled to use the vaccines. When diseases are eradicated many people tend not to see the need for vaccines any more, yet it is the same immunization program that has the power and strength to keep them at bay. Here are 10 myths about vaccines and a truth verdict about them:

 

  1. May vaccines will weaken and override my child’s immune system

Most immunization programs involve many vaccines with some of them taken simultaneously. For example, within the first month of life a baby gets up to 6 vaccines on a single visit to the doctor. By the time they reach 2 years of age they would have received a total of about 23 vaccine shots. It is not surprising that some parents think that taking this many vaccine shots can have an effect on the baby’s immunity system and actually cause it to be weak, if not taking over.

One thing parents do not know is that the baby actually faces a lot more immunologic challenges on an everyday basis. The air they breath is filled with microbes, the food they eat and the toys they put in their mouths when the play are all full of immunity dangers. However, the immunity system easily deals with this and as such a vaccine shot becomes almost nothing when compared to the other immunity threats that the child faces each day.

It is absolutely safe for your child to receive many vaccines including the multiple vaccine shots that are taken simultaneously. These vaccines have been heavily tested and have proved to be to totally safe.

 

 

  1. If other children are vaccinated mine does not have to be vaccinated

There is a common myth that as long as other children are vaccinated your child does not really have to get vaccinated as they will not be at risk of contracting infections from other children they play with.

Verdict:

The required number of immunized children to reduce contagious infections is 95%. This is called herd immunity. According to studies, it is very rare to find a community with that magic number and as such it is better for your child to be 100% safe.

 

  1. Since the diseases concerned have bee eradicated, we no longer need the vaccines

Since some diseases we get vaccinated against have disappeared, it should be safe to not get vaccinated against them right?

Even when a disease disappears from the public health sector it does not necessarily mean it does not exist anymore. The causing agent is still there somewhere; our bodies are just better equipped to resist the diseases from manifesting. The disease is there in the background waiting to affect people with weak or compromised immune systems. Therefore remaining immunized all the time actually works to prevent the disease from reappearing within the public health sector.

 

  1. Vaccines cause autism and other disorders

There are concerns that some vaccine combinations can cause neurological and development disorders. The combination of measles, mumps and rubella has particularly been fingered in the development disorder autism which has led many parent into fearing the vaccine combination. Research in England has discredited these reports and actually explain that the rumors come by because autism develops around the same age time that the vaccine is administered and therefore it is just an unfounded coincidence.

There is no medical evidence that proves that combined vaccines cause autism and development disorders but this does not necessarily mean that the vaccines do not cause other issues.

 

  1. The baby will get the disease regardless of having received the vaccine

There is fear that children may contract the disease the vaccine is meant to prevent.

Verdict:

This fear is founded upon the vaccines that contain live but weakened micro agents. There were reports back in that day when live weakened polio virus was used, which lead to the phasing out of that type of vaccine in favor of the vaccine made from killed virus. Today there are still some vaccines that contained live weakened viruses, vaccines like the measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox all use live weakened viruses. They have a potential of causing the illness they are meant to prevent but the resulting illness will be way less sever than the original disease contracted outside immunization.

Most vaccines used to be prepared and preserved using a substance called thimerosal. Thimerosal prevent the vaccine from being contaminated by bacteria, but it contains a certain form of mercury called ethylmecury. Mercury has been proved t be harmful to a developing nervous system. This is why the compound thimerosal was discontinued around 1999. Some vaccines are still using it though but they come with a label that notifies of the presence of thimerosal.

Verdict:

Recent studies show that ethylmercury is not as harmful as many people think as the human body can process and eliminate ethylmecury without absorbing it into cells. As such, chances are very very slim that if your baby receives a vaccine prepared with thimerosal they will suffer from any neurological problems. In fact, experts say that it is the diet that parents should worry about instead, food like fish and related products contain large amounts of organic mercury which can be harmful to the developing child.

 

  1. Children suffering from a cold should not receive vaccines

It is common to believe and think that an ill child should not have a vaccine administered to them as their immune system is compromised and they easily have a bad reaction to the vaccine.

Verdict:

Mild illness does not affect the child’s ability to handle vaccines. It is the more aggressive illness and high states of immune depression that can affect the child’s ability to deal with administered vaccines. The doctor evaluates every sick child and determines if they are in a state to receive a vaccine or not. A situation where by a child has a very high fever and ear infections is not really ideal for vaccine administration but a mild cold will not have an effect on the child’s ability to react to the administered vaccine.

  1. I had chicken pox as a child, it is not a big deal

Most parent who had chicken pox as a child think that chicken pox is a minor disease and it is not a big deal so it is not necessary for their kids to be immunized against it.

Verdict:

Yes, chicken pox is not severe on most kids but there are kids who die from it. This happens when the chicken lesions are infected with other dangerous organisms like the bacteria staphylococcus and necrotizing fasciitis. The virus itself is more dangerous when contracted as an adult that is why children should be immunized against chicken pox early.

 

  1. Vaccine provide 100% protection

Some people think that vaccines provide 100% immunity form the diseases they act against.

Verdict:

This is not true. At best a is 95% effective in protecting you against diseases.

 

  1. Vaccines work better when the child is older

There are parents who think it is better to wait until their child is much older before they can be vaccinated. This is brought forth by the idea that the immunity system will be much stronger to handle live vaccines.

Verdict:

Vaccines are meant to protect us in a time when we are most vulnerable to contracting diseases. The time when we are most vulnerable to disease is when we are young and as such that is when vaccines work the most.
